Expeditie Olga Robinson
Jackie Robinson and the Integration of Baseball by Scott Simon, X The first African American major league ballplayer of the twentieth century was a hard-nosed, high-spirited athlete who became one of the most admired personalities in the country.Jackie Robinson personified courage from the minute he stepped into the major leagues, adorned proudly in his Dodger blue.Nevertheless, he was a man who bore a daily, bloody trial of vicious attacks, race-baiting taunts, and death threats, risking both his safety and his sanity in order to simply play the game. The strain would end his life far too soon– but he gave his life for something great, as all heroes do. In Jackie Robinson and the Integration of Baseball, renowned broadcaster Scott Simon brings his passion for baseball and civil rights to this crucial moment in history. He deftly captures the drama of Robinson’ s first year in baseball, tracing his journey from rookie to Rookie of the Year, the award that now bears Robinson’ s name. At the close of World War II, no nation was freer or stronger than the United States– and yet few major nations so openly subjugated so many of their own citizens.Simon recounts how Robinson struggled with racism both in the army and on the baseball diamond, finally landing a place in the Negro Leagues as a shortstop.Just at the time when the country was beginning to question the morality of racial segregation, Robinson was battling bigotry every step of the way– from his entry into the minor leagues; to Opening Day, April 15, 1947, when he helped the Brooklyn Dodger win; to his first World Series. But for the man who " just wanted to be treated like any other player, " the goal of integrating the major leagues was worth every moment ofagony and anguish. Simon reveals how Robinson’ s skills and daring turned adversaries into admirers.
Swiss Family Robinson (Collector's Edition) One of Disney's biggest and most fondly remembered hits, the spectacular screen version of the literary classic "Swiss Family Robinson" is full of breathtaking South Seas scenery, hundreds of exotic animals, and treacherous pirates. This heroic tale chronicles the courageous exploits of the Robinson family after they are shipwrecked on a deserted island. Using teamwork and ingenuity, they skillfully overcome the obstacles of nature and transform their new home into a "civilized" community. But the ultimate challenge lies ahead when a band of cutthroat pirates threaten to destroy the Robinson's Makeshift paradise. Capture the thrills, romance, and fun of this unforgettable Disney film! 1. The film was based on the book by Johann Wyss, written to preserve the tales he and his sons made up while imagining themselves in Robinson Crusoe's predicament. Not originally intended for publication, the narrative was later edited and illustrated by Wyss' descendants. 2. Filmed on the Caribbean island of Tobago, the motion picture's lavish preproduction planning and on-location shooting (22 weeks) resulted in a budget that exceeded $4 million, but the extraordinary box office returns, subsequent popular reissues, and release on home video in 1982 has made it one of Disney's top-grossing films. 3. There was one problem with the filming location of Tobago: it had no animals. Tropical birds, gulls, ostriches, snakes, tigers, zebras, baby elephants, and monkeys were all flown to the island, along with 14 animal trainers. 4. One afternoon the flamingos Disney "hired" for the film took off from Tobago and headed south to British Guiana. Fortunately, they returned the next day at feeding time. 5. Audio Commentary With Ken Annakin, Tommy Kirk, James MacArthur, And Kevin Corcoran, 6. Original Theatical Animated Short "Sea Salts", 7. "Adventure In The Making", 8.
